Finnerty Gardens Victoria
A Hidden Gem for Garden Lovers
If you love the idea of exploring a secret garden, then Finnerty Gardens in Victoria, British Columbia is for you. When it comes to a city that’s FAMOUS for its gardens, this is one of Victoria's best kept secrets.
Join me as we step through the gates into a magical realm…..
First though, something of a confession…I’d lived in Victoria for quite a few years before I made it to this garden. I’d heard nothing about it until I went looking for some new gardens to visit in the city.
When I did finally walk through the gates for the first time, I was awestruck by its beauty. The meandering paths let the garden unfold as you walk through it. Rather than grand vistas, it’s filled with pretty vignettes.
And SO. MANY. FLOWERS!
You'll find the garden on the ground of the University of Victoria. It's one of the loveliest and most serene of Victoria's gardens. Being a woodland garden - Finnerty is not as manicured as some of the city’s other gardens.
If you’re looking for some time out from the action of the city, this is a little haven of tranquility.
Discovering Victoria's Hidden Jewel
Victoria is well-known for its lush landscapes and vibrant gardens, making it a must-visit destination for garden enthusiasts.
Known as the "City of Gardens," it’s a city that offers plenty of green spaces that attract both visitors and locals.
While Victoria attractions like Butchart Gardens often steal the spotlight with their grand displays, Finnerty Gardens offers a more intimate and peaceful experience. Even during peak blooming season I’ve never seen it crowded.
The gardens span over six acres and are home to more than 1,500 species of rhododendrons, azaleas, and various other plant species. It's a place where garden artistry and wild nature beautifully intertwine, creating a harmonious environment that I’ve always found relaxing and inspiring.
The History of Finnerty Gardens
What does Dracula have to do with Finnerty Gardens?
I’m SO glad you asked.
The story of Finnerty Gardens is an interesting one. In the late 1800’s Dr Richard Stoker - who was the brother of Bram Stoker, author of “Dracula” - and his wife Susan, established a summer home in Cowichan Lake (further north on Vancouver Island). They planted rhododendron seeds they had collected from Afghanistan and India, which grew particularly well in the Island climate.
At the time, I’m sure they had no idea they were also planting the seeds of a garden that would be enjoyed by visitors over a hundred years later.
In the early 1900’s, a new couple arrived in Cowichan Lake - George and Suzanne Simpson. They purchased some land from the Stokers and set up a nursery. In 1931, after Dr Stoker’s death, both properties were sold and the Simpson’s returned to Europe.
That might have been the end of it, however in the late 1930’s the Simpson’s decided to return to Vancouver Island and purchased the former Stoker property. They continued to grow a large collection of rhododendrons and managed the garden into the 1960’s.
In 1966, Mrs Simpson gifted her large collection of rhododendrons to the University. A local group of rhododendron enthusiasts helped plan the garden and formed the “Friends of the University Gardens”. Transplanting 50 year old rhododendrons is not without its challenges, but the group was successful and some of those old giants are still in the garden today.
Over the years, the garden has flourished, with contributions from students, faculty, and the local community. These contributions have been instrumental in shaping the garden into the lush, vibrant space it is today.
The garden stands as a testament to the enduring beauty and importance of green spaces in urban environments.
It also highlights the importance of community involvement and commitment to protecting natural spaces for future generations.
What Makes Finnerty Gardens Special?
A Haven for Rhododendron Lovers
Of course, given its history, one of the standout features of Finnerty Gardens is its impressive collection of rhododendrons.
With over 500 different species, the garden boasts one of the largest collections in North America. And when they are in bloom, this huge array of rhododendrons creates a stunning visual spectacle.
The vibrant flowers create a tapestry of colour during the spring months, making it a paradise for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. The garden's layout allows you to wander among these beautiful plants, offering a closer look at their intricate blooms.
A Symphony for the Senses
Finnerty Gardens isn't just a feast for the eyes - it's an experience for all the senses.
As you stroll through the winding paths, you'll encounter the sweet fragrance of blooming flowers, the gentle rustle of leaves, and the melodic songs of local bird species.
It’s a place that invites you to pause and appreciate the intricate details that make up the garden's ecosystem.
You can truly immerse yourself in the beauty of nature and find a moment of calm. Whether you're listening to the rhythmic chirping of crickets or watching the dance of sunlight through the leaves, every moment spent here is a reminder of nature's profound beauty.
More than Flowers
Given the woodland style of the garden, it also attracts plenty of birds. A common sight are hummingbirds flitting among the flowers – you’ll likely hear them before you see them. Look up and see if you can find a barred owl hiding in the trees. I’ve even seen a Cooper’s Hawk here. There are also plenty of squirrels scampering among the trees.
You might also catch sight of some of the local deer…but hopefully OUTSIDE the garden! (Ask any Victoria gardener about their experience with the local deer population!)
